About the Design
Rudy Faber - The 'Namakubi' (severed head), while being a very grisly depiction, is one of the most popular and recognizable motifs in Japanese tattoos. The designs in tattoos often represent a scene of warfare of which headhunting was customary.
I myself have a Namakubi tattooed as part of a sleeve tattoo depicting a scene featuring the legendary Onna-bugeisha (a female Samurai) Tomoe Gozen on horseback holding the decapitated head of the Samurai Honda no Morishige of Musashi.
